Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) is an ancient internal Chinese martial art renowned for its numerous health benefits. While many now practice taiji slowly to enhance balance, strength, and vitality, the martial aspects are often overlooked. Taijiquan, or 'Grand Ultimate Fist', is a potent combat form that focuses on short and medium-range fighting.

These video lessons provide pragmatic martial insights for each of the 37 postures found in traditional Taiji, derived from forms passed down by Yang, Ban-Hou. Once grasped, these fundamental principles enable viewers to extrapolate applications for every movement regardless of their particular Taiji style.

In China, t'ai chi ch'uan is classified under the Wudang group of Chinese martial arts that utilize internal power (jing), incorporating Qi (energy). The origins of the basic postures in the Yang form trace back through Wudang mountain to the Shaolin Temple, evolving from a series of movements originating from "Chang Quan" (Long Fist) - a reference to the winding Long River or Yangtze. Around 800 AD, philosopher Xu, Xuan-Ping is credited for developing a long Kung Fu comprising 37 forms that included common Tai Chi movements such as "Play the Guitar", "Single Whip", "Step Up to Seven Stars", "Jade Lady Works the Shuttles", "High Pat on Horse", and "Phoenix Flaps Its Wings".

"Taiji Chang Quan" existed in numerous variations and eventually transformed into Taijiquan. Related forms of the same era like "Heavenly-Inborn Style", "Nine Small Heavens", and "Acquired Kung Fu" also exhibit similarities to what later became Taijiquan. The principles of softness, sticking, adhering, and utilizing an opponent's momentum against them were established in these preceding martial styles.

Bodhidharma's teachings at the Buddhist Shaolin Temple that expounded on using the mind to guide Qi for energizing the physique are widely regarded as the foundation of all Internal Martial Arts, including Tai Chi.

Dr. Yang's tai chi lineage traces back to the Yang family through Grandmaster Kao, Tao (高濤) and his mentor Yue, Huanzhi (樂奐之), who was an indoor disciple of Yang, Chengfu (楊澄甫).
